Backup Settings Of Your Windows Mobile With Settings Exporter

Do you have ORD(Obsessive ROM-Updating Disorder)? Do you flash you windows mobile frequently & find it troublesome to setup your device settings all over again? Well there is just an app to ease this task. Its Settings Exporter by NRGZ28 and is currently available only in his ROMs.

Settings Exporter backups various settings of the device. A little description of each function of Settings Exporter:-

1. Bluetooth

Will backup all your paired devices and associations, for both Widcomm and Microsoft bluetooth stack based devices. It will create several .reg files for this section.

2. Face / Twitt

Will backup your facebook / twitter account info. For twitter only your username is backed up, you still have to type in your password. Sorry… it doesn’t work right when restored, so I left that part out. Still not bad though…

3. Regional

All your regional settings as found in the Regional panel in Settings. Nothing fancy here…

4. Sounds / Rings

Will backup your custom ringtone and your custom notifications sounds and options.

5. Power

Will backup your power / backlight settings.

6. Alarms

Self explanatory

7. Owner

All your Owner info as found in the Owner control panel in Settings.

8. Sense Tabs

This will backup your Sense tabs configuration for Sense 2.5 only. It will backup their order and whether they’re hidden or not.

9. Sense Settings

Will backup your city list, F/C degree settings, Data download settings, weather update interval.

10. Device Keys

Will backup the device button assignments.

For now, this folder(\Storage Card\XDA_UC\Exporter) needs to be created manually on the storage card. If you’d like to export only a few section, touch the button you’d like exported and it will turn red. Then push “Export Highlighted”. If you’d just like to export everything, then… push “Export Everything”. After these actions you should see several .reg files in the above mentioned folder on your storage card.

7 Things That Are Bad For Windows Phone 7 Series

Ever since Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer announced Windows Mobile 7 at MWC in Barcelona, everyone in the mobile tech world has been talking about it. Microsoft used to be a pretty big player in the mobile phone space, but recently they have lost massive market share to competitors like RIM’s Blackberry, Apple’s iPhone, and Google’s Android. But is Windows Phone 7 going to save Microsoft and pull them back to the top? Although it is very possible, here are a few limitations that are working against them:

1. Late Release

Windows Mobile 7 was initially slated to be released by 2009. Now, Microsoft is saying that it will be released in late 2010. Instead, in 2009 they released Windows Mobile 6.5, which is supposed to be a brief holdover until the new software could come out.

The main problem for Microsoft is that the longer they wait before they actually release Windows Phone 7, the longer their competitors will have to build market share. In 2009 alone, they lost 13% of their market share. How much will they lose in 2010? Because smart phones are such a social device nowadays, this results in a worse experience for all existing Windows Mobile users.

2. Bad Reviews

The reviews for Windows Mobile 6.5 were definitely not favorable for Microsoft. This bad press doesn’t lead people to sit on the edge of their seats anticipating Windows Mobile 7. The good news is that this has forced Microsoft to completely start over and build a new operating system from scratch. Hopefully they get it right this time.

3. Multi-tasking

One of the rumors going around is that Windows Phone 7 may not be able to multi-task. Of course, this is also a limitation of the iPhone, whereas Blackberries and Androids currently have multitasking capabilities. It is also rumored that iPhones will support multitasking with the release of its 4.0 software. If this is the case, then Microsoft could be left behind even before they begin.

4. Bing

Microsoft’s Bing search engine definitely isn’t bad, but most people still want to use Google. Most people find nothing wrong with Google, and they don’t want to have to learn a new search engine when the one they have been using for a decade is perfectly fine. Windows Mobile 7, of course, completely integrates Bing. Users will have to jump through a bunch of hoops if they want to use Google. All the other phones integrate with Google because they don’t have a search engine of their own to promote.

5. Upgraders could be left in the cold

People who are already using Windows Mobile 6.1 or 6.5 might find that none of the apps they bought work on Windows Mobile 7. Since Windows Mobile 7 was built from the ground up, backwards compatibility is unlikely. Microsoft has said that they will most likely release some porting tools for developers or an emulator, but this isn’t a perfect solution.

6. Apps

When it comes to smart phones (and computers), it’s really all about the apps. Apple will have had a 3 year head start on Microsoft, and their App Store currently boasts more than 150,000 apps. Google’s Android and the Blackberry have been struggling to catch up for over a year. Microsoft hasn’t even started.

7. Usability

Although this isn’t a limitation YET, it is worth keeping in mind. Microsoft is normally very good at creating devices which can perform a lot of tasks and which have a lot of features. Where they usually fail is in the customer experience and the usability of their products. Hopefully they really concentrate on this aspect with Windows Phone 7.

Windows Mobile 7 looks like it could be a great device if Microsoft gets it right. Unfortunately, their competitors have a multi-year head start, and Microsoft will be climbing an uphill battle.

Mobile Phone Virus Attack

If you own either a Windows Mobile or Symbian Series 60 smart phone,it will soon be hit by a virus.According to McAfee,a security solutions company,the number of malware programs created for mobile devices is expected to reach 726 by the end of 2006,a three-fold increase from 226 last year.

“Malware on handsets is following the same pattern that was observed on desktops,” Today,people create viruses for financial gain.”

The first generation of viruses are really the proof-of-concept variety.Here are some examples.

In 2000,the Timifonica virus infected PCs to send harmless text messages to cell phones.That’s about all it did.The cabir worm (1994) spread between Symbian Series 60 phones through open Bluetooth connections Cabir spreads as infected SIS package called caribe.sis.

Commwarrior also spreads over Bluetooth via MMS,but spreads quite fast.It copies itself on to memory card that is inserted into the infected phone.It will also infect SIS executable files in the phone or memory card.It just announces itself within the browser window.

SymbOS.Skulls is a Trojan horse that changes all the application icons on a symbian phone to skull icons.
The redBrowser Trojan,which infects J2ME phones,promises to let you surf WAP-based web sites without a WAP connection.When active it sends SMS message to premium rate numbers at the rate of $5 – $6 per SMS.

There are Trojans that steal address book information and send them to hacker via SMS or MMS.Some look for infotmation such as stored passwords or sensitive information in spreadsheets.And some overwrite the system software in the phone,causing it to reset itself or behave strangely.

The next generation of viruses will target users who use their phones for financial transactions and mobile banking.

Protection

There are a couple of ways to protect handsets.Firstly,do turn off the Bluetooth mode and switch it on only when exchanging files.If you must have Bluetooth on,then switch it to the hidden mode.It is more difficult to write viruses to penetrate phones that are in the hidden Bluetooth mode.

Most security software makers such as Symantec,Mcafee,F-Secure,Trend Micro and others offer mobile security solutions that self-update.The agent module running on the phone was able to find and quarantine viruses in real-time.It has on-demand scanning too,and can update itself automatically.

At about $40,the protection is well worth it.Think about how much you’d have to pay a service center to restore your phone after a virus attack.

Remember how “I Love You” spread around the world in few hours?Imagine something similar happening on mobile devices.It would be a lot faster and lethal.

HTC Touch Diamond2 Clone With Dual Booting Android & WM

While the owners of HTC Touch Diamond2 use emulators and expect a full firmware from the operating system from Google, Chinese craftsmen have produced a clone of the smartphone, offering the user to choose the desired OS at startup: Windows Mobile or Android.
The clone is equipped with a processor with a clock frequency of 624 MHz and is inferior to the original screen resolution – only WQVGA instead of the usual WVGA. One of the additional functions of the smartphone is the support for WiFi and GPS.
Currently the smartphone is under development and can be loaded under Android 1.6 or Windows Mobile 6.5. It is unknown whether the versions will be updated before it will be available for production or not.
In any case, the owners of real HTC Touch Diamond2 will not win from that, because use of their own processors by Chinese manufacturers to install the firmware to the original practically is excluded.
